I don’t remember how did it happen when I learned that underneath an apple not only own shadow but also reflections and colour tone of the object itself. All objects in the atmosphere connected and correlated with each other.
But why in general would it be so important to represent all possibility of the tone?
I think importance of this only in build of the volume on the flat surface. As image is 2-dimensional one way to express the volume can be graphical (linear) and another is tonal. But if object more complex then the only way is via tonal gradation express the dimensionality of this object and whole image.
The atmospheric potential in the visible world for human being is from black to white. The closest element to us will be more contrast and then further it is then more indiscernible it become.
