Understanding Visual Culture (Assignment 2) Reflection on my progress

Demonstration of subject based knowledge and understanding. Honestly, it's so hard to judge yourself. This part was more complicated than the first. Also, I had difficulties with timing as I had a plan to complete this part four weeks earlier but... During preparation to each exercise, I needed to read quite a lot so I actually was not to able to stop. The question of how to "be normal" in reading the most relevant now for me. Of course, without a comparative understanding of subject content, I couldn’t move further through the tasks. As well as I always try to analyse subject “from helicopter view” and bear in mind historical, intellectual, cultural and institutional contexts. For instance, I took artists from different countries, from different periods of time and who concern with different aspects of society. This makes the whole discussion far more interesting in sense of Modernity.

Demonstration of research skills. Never had problems reaching the result I wanted. If If not able at first glance to get something in the English language so most likely I can find it in other languages). The ability to design and carry out a research project probably I can do better but I think it will come with practice and basically, that’s why I’m here...

Demonstration of critical and evaluation skills. I love this section. In a part about Genealogy of the modern, I tried to prove that there does different point of view exist. I tried to use shreds of evidence and argumentation which could support my opinion.

Communication. I tried to accumulate my experience and explain it as easy as I would explain it to a child:

… we can’t just put food in someone else mouth (about Kitsch), avant-garde art is about:

- first, you need to buy products (collect information about art)

- then cook them (analyze, discuss, etc.),

- only after that you can start your dinner (enjoy the plastic values).

Nevertheless, there is a long way to go to an ideal writing and a fundamental approach, as was the case with Clement Greenberg.
