Selfie culture has always interested me. I despised and laughed at people taking pictures of themselves and "playing on camera." This experience has escalated especially in China, where young Chinese are perverted to such an extent that it becomes absurd.
But, since I am an artist, I consider it necessary to be open to such things;) and especially when talking about visual culture.
After moving to Germany, I finally got access to all full-fledged social networks. In China, all networks are blocked except under the control of the Chinese authorities. First of all, I subscribed to some of the Instagram stars. I found some interesting artists working with social media or expressing themselves in this regard: Signe Pierce; Molly Soda; Arvida Byström; Amalia Ulman; An Xiao and work The Artist is Kinda Present…
…and I changed my mind on selfies and social activity in general.
The reason for this work was the desire to work with self and to combine the visual range of the physical image with digital elements.
The story of Kirill Serebrennikov can be found on the Internet. In a nutshell - an art figure pursued by law for political reasons.
This case received a great response and a hashtag appeared in support of Serebrennikov. #нашдругкирилл
I used the selfie of Kirill Serebrennikov himself with no less outstanding man Seva Novgorodsev. I saw the composite solution for the color spot in this photo and immediately the solution was born how to use light and paint.
On the one hand, people do not know who they are talking about. Someone might think that Einstein or Friedrich Schiller is on the left side, and on the right side a modern rapper or musician ... The juxtaposition of eras, age and style.
The picture is highlighted in a different colour (ultraviolet lamp), thereby, as if standing out from the general plan of the standard post in Instagram. Effect of selfie - movement, moment. I think this is especially interesting - the transfer of this moment. Due to the play of the warm background and the cool colour of the paper, even more movement and dynamics appear.
The subject matter gains additional reinforcement through the use of the material and digital approach. Just like life itself remains physical (paper, the drawing itself), the digital only changes the approach and creates a suitable frame for the presentation. In other words, the frame of photos - in the form of likes and comments.
