Reflection on My Final Exhibition

I’m more than happy with my decision to present my bachelor's exhibition as an online experience. First of all, it was a completely new challenge for me; I had never managed every aspect of an exhibition on my own before. And secondly, during that period, I already had over five physical exhibitions, so doing something different felt necessary. The virtual format gave this project a special and distinctive character.

One of the biggest surprises was the visibility. My online exhibition Making It Alone has now been visited by 116 people from Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, and other countries.

I simply can’t imagine any physical space where I could have reached such a wide and international audience.

After creating the feedback form (https://www.marinawittemann.com/feedback), I encouraged people to not only visit the exhibition but to share their impressions, and many thanked me for giving them a chance to experience something unique. Sixteen people filled out the questionnaire.

Whether the questions I chose were the best or not is something I might understand better with time, but it already gave me a valuable overview of how the exhibition was experienced.

Some questions were direct (such as "What did you feel during the exhibition?" or "Which work stood out to you?"), and others were more open-ended to allow space for personal expression. I translated everything into English, German, and Russian so people could respond in the language they felt most comfortable with.

Key Themes Identified:

1. Emotional Resonance: Many viewers reported a profound emotional connection to the artworks, experiencing a spectrum of feelings from fear and inevitability to joy and transformation.

2. Material and Form: The use of materials like foam, wood, and coloured paper was noted for creating tension and depth, enhancing the tactile quality of the pieces.

3. Digital Presentation: While the virtual gallery format was appreciated for its accessibility, some users found navigation challenging and suggested improvements for a more immersive experience.

4. Artistic Communication: The inclusion of the artist's voice and personal narratives added authenticity and allowed viewers to connect more deeply with the creative process.

5. Stimulating Discussion: The exhibition successfully prompted discussions on topics like materiality, emotional expression, and the subjective experience of art.

Later, I used ChatGPT to help me analyse the results, which I’ll share below.

One more thing I noticed after launching the exhibition: several artist friends became interested in the virtual format and started exploring it themselves. That felt meaningful, like I helped spread an idea, showing another way to present work outside traditional gallery settings.

A special moment for me was when Kunstmatrix (the platform I used) selected my exhibition to be featured on their main website and social media. That recognition gave my work additional visibility and presence.

In terms of technical aspects, I believe the feedback form reflects how well-organised the exhibition was overall. There were some comments about the music I used, and a few people said they missed the physicality of being close to the artworks, especially the ability to touch them. But this is exactly the contradiction I find most fascinating: in a physical show, you also can't touch the works, yet in the virtual space, the distance feels even more charged. I actually love this tension.

This entire experience taught me so much, not just about presenting art differently, but also about how people connect with it, even from far away.

• Include more personal commentary; viewers loved hearing your voice and process.

• Improve technical ease for navigation.

Final Thoughts

Your exhibition sparked emotion, thought, and discussion. Viewers valued the honesty in your work, the way material choices convey emotion, and the balance of fragility and strength. Several expressed a strong desire to experience your work in person next time.

A bit strange. I think because of the music. The topic is raw, some of the works are very emotionally charged. Yet the music is very robot-space-calm-zero emotions :)

Loved all the sculptures. Raw colorful hearths with blood arteries (for me). And the fact that they are all different colors is even making the point stronger!

Yes. I love the phrase “shape of feeling”, this is new (at least to me). We are used to feelings having taste, color, sound…shape is new :)

I think the strongest points were your videos where you explain things. May be just placing video more central and not giving too much options of navigating through the exhibition. Better watch video!

Over the last couple of years, Marina has been developing her artistic expression in an impressive manner.

Out of raw material and recycled papers, she managed to create emotion through vibrant colours and the mixture of texture. Marina is playing with design, architecture and art in a “form follows emotion” aspiration. Her multicultural life experience nurtures this expression and interpretation of abstraction

By doing so, she offers us glimpses of her personal journey, mixing suffering and hope, resilience and joy in a unique poetry of form and colour.

With the ambition of triggering emotions through materiality and colour, Marina is absorbing a rich art culture from Kurt Schwitters dadaism to the early works of CoBra artists, Abstract expressionists but also Yves Klein, Pierre Soulages, or Robert Rauschenberg,

These exhibition captures Marina’s journey, sometimes confused, sometimes magical but always authentic to create her own artistic universe.

Focusing even more on the conceptual aspiration behind her work and bringing more modernity in her execution, Marina is likely to develop a unique and powerful artistic expression, perhaps best represented in this exhibition with her most intimate work “for my Mom”.

Very interesting platform which gives artists the opportunity to exhibit apart from the ‚analog‘ gallery.

The ‚walk‘ through the exhibition is not so user friendly. It took me some time to navigate.

For me there is no such thing as an artwork that I can not understand. I don’t have to understand everything… I just let it do its work on me by looking at it. The effect is not always immediate.

For me the fact that you work with your bare hands, with materials that we see and use every day, in forms that resemble our own physiology, is almost a guarantee for ‚understanding‘. In a naturally given intuitive way, trusting our biological and spiritual instincts.

Generally yes, one can sense the main message on a spectrum of human feelings in the current times and how it is intensified with the material(s) and the exterior of the physical.

It was an interesting experience, and gives a different note on how to read the artworks. The simple user experience gives a good pathway to stroll back and forth from one work to another, which is usually very linear in a physical room.

It would be interesting to understand why these works were chosen was the exhibition, what shaped the idea of it etc.

Скульптуры с пеной понравились своей яркостью и дерзкой проявленность на мой взгляд! Вполне понятна суть темы через работы - считывание эмоций через материалы и формы! Проживание смыслов автора через свою призму восприятия жизни - любопытный опыт!

Без сомнений может! Ибо у каждого зрителя свой бесценный опыт этой жизни и я уверена, что восприятие работ и эмоций может быть разный в зависимости от опыта зрителя! И именно это и интересно было бы обсудить - в чем похожи восприятием, а в чем совершенно нет! Выставка побуждает к обсуждению восприятия трансформации форм искусства и влияния на эмоции зрителя.

Хороший формат для возможности сделать онлайн выставку и познакомиться с работами ближе, даже находясь за тысячи километров!

Очень понравился звуковой эффект во втором зале и я бы добавила звук и в первый зал. На мой взгляд не самый комфортный именно технический формат управления передвижением по выставке на этом сайте (слетало управление и не всегда видно информацию о работе)

Чувствуется понимание послания и зная про технику создания работ - понимала объем и цвет, но визуально как-будто не хватило объемности при приближении деталей некоторых работ на выставке (хор молчания )

It made me feel like I could almost be there with you in the studio, smell the materials, you really bring them alive.

The combination of the wood and the coloured paper gives an interesting tension, you used this in multiple pieces, but this combo of materials, also initially from the same source yet in different states and so differently perceived is great.

The dialogue if material can hold emotion would be one that I'd start, or if its the subjective viewer that feels an individual emotion responding to the emotion the artist put into the work, so its more a tool than an emotional vessel? :)

It was surprisingly working well. I'm sure physical it could resonate more but its a good idea.

Thank you for sharing your work - a great collection!

I enjoyed looking around the virtual gallery; however, I feel that your work would be better viewed in real time. I appreciate that this does not get as many global viewers, but the nature of your work looks so tactile and considers the context of emotions and feelings - it seems a shame not to be personally, physically close to it.

I’m not a fan of ‘white cube’ gallery spaces, but the plain backgrounds make your professional work stand out very well, so I see why you have gone for that. I found the music distracting and unnecessary, but the ‘making sounds’ much more ‘human’, real and connected to the work, often giving me goosebumps!

Good luck with everything - you have produced some incredible work and I truly hope it all goes well!

I think your video is really well produced and very professional. You're a natural talker and speak about your practice with fluency. Well done producing it - I know it takes so much time and effort putting it together and editing it. Were you actually talking to someone? - I often wonder when I see this presentation method (talking to someone off-camera) whether someone is there.

The presentation in the on-line gallery is in line with the standards of other KunstMatrix exhibitions with all the shortcomings this media inevitably constrains us. I got lost and trapped 'outside' in a couple of instances but found my way back. I think you've used the different presentation methods well - titles and info boards, access to videos and images with multiple views - which is especially necessary to your sculptural work.

It's great seeing the work presented together, and the decisions you made on which ones to present against others.
