ABOUT
Marina Wittemann, born in Moscow, now resides and creates in Germany. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose artworks have been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, South America, and Asia. In 2022, she was shortlisted for the VAO UK & International Emerging Artist Awards.
Wittemann's art delves into the viewer's emotions through the sensory qualities of materials and colour. She employs recycled and building materials, merging painting, sculpture, and installation to create compositions that challenge perceptions of value and permanence.
Her research explores intuition, affect, and sensory perception, drawing from synaesthesia and the unconscious. Through vivid colours, energetic brushstrokes, scratched boards, and fragmented surfaces, she investigates the visceral impact of materials, blurring the boundaries between destruction and creation. By incorporating elements of temporality and transformation, her works evoke a constant state of flux - questioning the stability of memory, narratives, and perception.
Wittemann also examines the tension between physical presence and digital representation, highlighting the fragility of materiality in an era of rapid dematerialization. Her exploration of media, propaganda, and text-based elements challenges established norms, urging viewers to critically engage with the structures that shape their understanding of the world.
